Janet had been raised to understand love from a distance. Love is patient, kind, never boastful…love is of God…love means never having to say you're sorry.

No one had told her of the joy or warned her of the pain.

The Joy

At the first teachers’ meeting, Willie stood up to speak, “Hi, I’m Bob and I’m an alco….” The teachers roared. Janet figured she’d have little trouble getting along with him.

In mid-September, as they waited for a meeting to begin, they realized they were both vegetarian and enjoyed rice and beans.

She suggested he buy a rice cooker in Chinatown where she’d found the perfect one. A few days later he mentioned his trouble finding one in the price range she’d suggested. They agreed to venture out that afternoon hoping her ability to speak Chinese would help him land a good deal.

Waiting on the corner, she kept an eye out for the silver CRX. She’d decided to wear her forest green thermal shirt. The pants were a snug fit, but she felt no guilt, no shame, and…
